The goal

These infographics were created before the 2018 elections to demonstrate the need for Harris County to increase funding for safe bikeways to candidates and voters in the 2018 Harris County Elections

Approach

We looked at crash record data from TXDOT and supplemented it with data from Kinder Institute, HGAC, and Harris County and split it into each of the 4 Harris County precincts to show

crash locations, details on the circumstances and severity of those crashes, and a a breakdown of how the county’s Mobility Fund is being spent vs. the preferences of Harris County residents. It was designed to be very visually accessible and to work in digital and print formats as an impactful 1-pager.

Impact

When the new HC Commissioners took office in 2019, there was a new focus on building streets that worked for all people. Thanks to the consistent advocacy of the Houston transit community there has been a major funding increase in safe bikeways since.

This series of infographics won a Reed Campaigns and Elections award in 2019 for “Best Use of Data from a Grassroots Organization.”
